Update NowThings got heated at Masseto in the early eighties: Cabernet Sauvignon was the right grape to plant in the vineyard of the same name on the Tyrrhenian coast, according to the owners, the Tuscan noble family of Frescobaldi. Merlot, insisted their star winemaker André Tchelistcheff – and he got his way. Facing west into the setting sun, this vineyard near Bolgheri runs along a seam of blue clay from the Pliocene era, and its vines – as was soon demonstrated – held huge potential.
Some of the parcels planted with Merlot and Cabernet franc were not selected for Masseto in 2017. But if they were not suitable for the main blend, the winemakers felt they had enough personality for a wine of their own. With a few other components added, the result was the first Massetino. This distinguished wine, which is only produced in minimal quantities, finally saw the light of day in 2019 – exactly 30 years after its «big brother» Masseto.
