The velvety one

Merlot is the second biggest Bordeaux variety after Cabernet Sauvignon. Where Cabernet is rough, Merlot is smooth; where Cabernet is fussy about terroir, Merlot is easy-going. With over 100,000 hectares, Merlot is the most cultivated grape in France, and this variety is also one of the most popular in the world.

Where it grows:

  • in Bordeaux
  • it is the number one grape variety in Ticino
  • In Tuscany, Merlot is found in many famous «Supertuscans»
  • ...and Merlot actually also grows all around the world!

What it tastes like:

  • very soft with seductive fruity sweetness and rich, yellow plum
  • great Merlot wines develop multi-layered flavours of leather and truffle upon maturity

What it goes with:

  • like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot goes with all kinds of meat
  • the perfect accompaniment to minced meat dishes and Italian salsiccia
  • this grape wouldn’t say no to a pizza either
