Update NowOriginally, Sassicaia was never even intended for sale. It came about by way of an experiment. In 1944, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, scion of an aristocratic Piedmontese family, was the first to plant the Bordeaux grapes Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet franc in the village of Bolgheri in the Maremma. They flourished in the warm climate of southern Tuscany. The wine was intended to be an everyday drinking wine for family and friends. However, son Nicolò, the current head of Tenuta San Guido, urged his father to introduce Sassicaia to a wider audience. The wine was first marketed in 1968.
Today, Sassicaia is an absolute cult wine and has its own doc. The art of noble understatement: Sassicaia stands for elegance over brawn, connoisseurship over showmanship. Let yourself be seduced by the subtle charm of this immortal Super Tuscan.
