Update NowBeing an island has its advantages. When phylloxera decimated vineyards across Europe at the turn of the twentieth century, Sardinia watched from afar. As a result, grape varieties have been preserved here that otherwise would have certainly died out. Such as the Torbato: fresh, floral and bergamot-scented, it is part of the Malvasia family and has been growing in the Alghero region since the 14th century. Today, it is only grown in significant quantities by the Sella & Mosca winery. This winery uses it to produce both still and sparkling white wines. Meanwhile, bottles from the early 20th century can still be found in the cellars. Real historical artefacts.
