«Balìa» was the name once given to the house of a «Balìtore» or bailiff. Such a house, over 300 years old, is today the headquarters of the Balìa di Zola winery. In 2003, Veruska Eluci and Claudio Fiore established this company in its idyllic location: they packed all their belongings, moved from Tuscany to neighbouring Romagna and started making wine.
Their great love was and is the Sangiovese. In Tuscany, this grape has long been used to produce famous wines. Veruska and Claudio set out to prove that this can also be the case in Romagna. With energy and passion, they look after their 15 hectares of land in Modigliana, a picturesque ensemble that includes not only vines but also woodland and olive groves. The vineyard involves rigorous manual labour, with some of the grapes coming from vines that are over 50 years old. And they really have brought the Sangiovese to life in Romagna, whether in the juicy Balìtore, matured in stainless steel tanks, or the wonderfully complex Riserva Redinoce.
