Carlo Hauner senior was a man of great passions. Back in the 1960s, the successful artist fell hopelessly in love with the magical Aeolian island of Salina off the north coast of Sicily and chose to settle there. The wine made from Malvasia delle Lipari, extolled as the «nectar of the Gods» and one of Italy’s best sweet wines, had almost disappeared completely, but Hauner made it his mission to bring this divine creation back to life.
Since his death in 1996, Carlo Hauner junior has been continuing his work with the same passion and rigour. Nowadays, he not only grows Malvasia on the barren soils of Salina, but has also planted indigenous red varieties on the neighbouring island of Vulcano, which was known as the seat of the god of fire in ancient times and still has an active volcano today. He transports the harvested grapes by boat to his winery on Salina and turns them into a highly expressive wine.
