They say blood is thicker than water. But blood and wine can both be of the same consistency. At least, that’s the conclusion you come to from Paulo Chirillo’s story. When he was born, his Nonno drank to his good health and drew the sign of the cross on the lips of the new baby with a drop of wine. After a happy childhood, the young man went to the big city then moved far away and embarked on a career as a cardiologist.
Over time, Paolo Chirillo developed an increasing urge to return to his roots and the land of his birth. Around ten years ago he set up a small but refined winery in Motta Santa Lucia and planted almost nothing but indigenous vines on the ten hectares, in particular the red Magliocco, which appears to have a great future ahead of it. It covers around a quarter of the Calabrian vineyard area – and Calabria is one of Italy’s secret tips! Chirillo’s vines grow on secluded terraces by the Savuto river and ripen slowly, thanks to the favourable microclimate, to produce aromatic, harmonious wines full of charm.
