Vergaia was founded in 2017 by Philipp Hildebrand, former president of the Swiss National Bank and currently Vice Chairman of BlackRock, driven by his love of great wine and a clear vision. His friend of many years, Rudi Bindella sen., has been a partner in the venture since 2024, supporting the project with his oenological and culinary expertise.
Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy’s most renowned oenologists and a true pioneer, has joined forces with them, bringing his skill and expertise in winegrowing and winemaking.
The vines – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot – grow on sandy loam soils at an altitude of 80 to 90 metres above sea level. In the medium term they will cover an area of 10 hectares.
The young wines are matured for around 15 months in French barriques, the exact amount of time depending on the variety, and then blended into a final Vergaia assemblage, followed by 12 months of bottle ageing.
The 2020 Vergaia vintage, the first ever to be officially released, proved to be an elegantly full-bodied red wine with good mellowness and concentration, as well as offering a great array of distinctive aromatics and a rich flavour profile.
