We’ve all heard the stories: a wine enthusiast’s partner unwittingly uses the finest wine in the cellar to add to their goulash. This certainly wasn’t the purpose the producer had in mind!

So what does the perfect cooking wine look like? Simply put, it should be a simple wine that is also stylistically similar to the one you are serving with dinner. So let’s say, an inexpensive Sangiovese igt for cooking with, and a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano for pairing. As a rule of thumb, the cooking wine should be good enough for the cook to gladly sip away at it while preparing the mise en place.
