100 – a number with a special meaning for Podere Selva Capuzza. In 2018, the wines leaving the cellar represented the 100th harvest. In a natural amphitheatre south of Lake Garda, indigenous varieties such as Turbiana and Tuchi, Groppello, Sangiovese, Barbera and Marzemino prosper under ideal conditions and produce wines that are full of character.
Winemaker Luca Formentini, whose family has owned the 25-hectare property for – precisely – 100 years, turns the sun-drenched grapes into remarkable wines of various colours. What’s so special about it? The family-run business is the only winery in the region to produce wines in all three doc appellations that overlap around Lake Garda: Lugana, San Martino della Battaglia and Garda Classico.
For Luca Formentini, sustainability is not just an empty phrase: no herbicides have been used since 2010, the vineyards offer plenty of green space for flora and fauna, the grapes are all picked by hand and rainwater is collected and used for irrigation – to give just a few examples.
The estate, with its idyllic location, also boasts a restaurant with carefully renovated rooms and a beautiful garden as well as various charmingly furnished holiday apartments, spread among several buildings.
