Haras de Pirque is the House of Antinori’s thoroughbred – in the truest sense of the word. The 600-hectare estate not only comprises 20 hectares of vineyards, but is also home to a breeding programme for top-class thoroughbred horses that excel in races all over the world. While Eduardo A. Matte founded the stud farm and still looks after it today, the noble Antinori dynasty of Florence has been in charge of the wine since 2002.
The estate is located in Chile’s Maipo Valley, also known as the «Latin American Bordeaux». Here, at 550 to 750 m above sea level, the climate is similar to that around the Mediterranean, but the temperature varies by up to 25°C between day and night. The wines reward this with structure, character and fine-grained, elegant tannins. Organic methods of vine cultivation contribute to the quality. In the winery, which incidentally has the shape of a horseshoe (a nice detail), gravity is used to protect the grapes and the must as much as possible. And here’s another nice story: the Albis blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and the local Carmenère grape owes its name to the nickname of Antinori’s daughter Albiera.
