Update NowThe Plozza wine company has a clear vision: «To use passion, creativity and ideas to transform the treasures of the Valtellina into outstanding modern wines. For which we are truly grateful to our forebears.» This has always been a visionary endeavour.
Plozza is one of the pioneers of sforzato wine and was the first to launch it onto the market in 1964. The wine is made of dried Nebbiolo grapes, then matured in sweet chestnut and oak barrels or barriques. First, however, the grapes have to be picked. No easy task here in the Valtellina! The grapes grow on tiny terraces on breathtakingly steep hillsides, supported by more than 2,500 km of dry stone walls. This laborious manual labour in the sunshine is hot work for the Plozza harvesters – but it also fills them with great pride. They like to talk of «heroic winegrowing», and that’s no exaggeration. The company, which was founded in 1919, has one foot in Italy and another foot in Switzerland: the grapes are vinified in the cellar in Tirano then aged in the Swiss village of Brusio.
