All you need to know about magnums

Big bottles aren’t just out to make an impression, they also improve the wine by allowing it to develop better.

Why is that? Well, although a large-format bottle contains more wine than the usual 75 cl size, the bottleneck is just as narrow. This ensures less oxygen comes into contact with the contents. So when it comes to staying young for longest, big bottles come out on top. Give it a try! Taste the same wine from both a normal bottle and from a magnum or double magnum. We bet the big bottles have kept their flavour better.

Which wine should you buy in the large format?

Think long-term! When it comes to varieties that can and should be aged – Barolo, Super Tuscans, Bordeaux, Burgundy – investing in large bottles is particularly worth it.

How much does the most expensive bottle of wine in the world cost?

500,000 dollars. That’s how much a six-litre bottle of the Californian cult Cabernet 1992 Screaming Eagle brought in at a charity auction in Napa Valley 20 years ago. The buyer opted to stay anonymous, as all true philanthropists do.

Next time you visit one of our Bindella restaurants, ask us about large-format bottles of wine – we also serve these by the glass. And we are constantly expanding our range …

Where can you find the biggest bottle of wine?

The biggest bottle in the world is in – Switzerland! It is 4.20 metres tall and contains 3,094 litres of Spanish wine. It’s not really intended for drinking; rather, the bottle functions as a decorative advertisement at a car dealership in Lyssach in the canton of Bern.

What is a wine decanting cradle?

If you buy six-litre bottles of wine and up, it’s worth having this tool in the house, because pouring by hand is quite an effort. Just place your giant gems in this special contraption and tilt it with the crank until the wine pours out.
