Merlot

The velvety one
Merlot is the second biggest Bordeaux variety after Cabernet Sauvignon. Where Cabernet is rough, Merlot is smooth; where Cabernet is fussy about terroir, Merlot is easy-going. With over 100,000 hectares, Merlot is the most cultivated grape in France, and this variety is also one of the most popular in the world.
Where it grows:
in Bordeaux
it is the number one grape variety in Ticino
In Tuscany, Merlot is found in many famous «Supertuscans»
...and Merlot actually also grows all around the world!
What it tastes like:
very soft with seductive fruity sweetness and rich, yellow plum
great Merlot wines develop multi-layered flavours of leather and truffle upon maturity
What it goes with:
like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot goes with all kinds of meat
the perfect accompaniment to minced meat dishes and Italian salsiccia
this grape wouldn’t say no to a pizza either
