Domaine Trapet is a wonderful liaison between Burgundy and Alsace.
«I serve nature, I act as her right-hand man,» says the passionate winemaker Jean-Louis Trapet, who since 1997 has been nurturing his 14 hectares of vines, most of them in the community of Gevrey-Chambertin, in line with strict biodynamic principles. Wine is his great passion – first and foremost, naturally, the white and red Burgundies that he creates on the estate that he took over from his parents. This is followed as a close second by Alsace, which is the home of his wife Andrée, who provides him with valuable support in the winery.
Both of them are at pains not to wrest too much from their vines. «I deliberately follow the path of gentleness and respect, in order to achieve the best possible expression of my terroir,» says Jean-Louis Trapet, who aims to support the vines in their search for a natural balance with earth, water, air and sun. He is convinced that human beings are just passing through but the earth is everlasting. No wonder that with such a philosophical mindset and vines on the estate that average 30 years old, he ends up with outstanding terroir wines. They are a prime example of purity, balance and finesse, and some – such as the Grand cru Latricières-Chambertin – count among the elite of Burgundy. The high quality of the wines is also shown by the fact that the estate was recently accepted into the association known as the «sauvegarde de la diversité des cépages de Bourgogne» – which is the equivalent of a noble title!
